Letter from the Secretary General
Esteemed delegates and faculty advisors,
It is my distinct honor to invite you all to the eighth annual session of the Oasis International School Model United Nations conference (OISMUN) which will be held from Saturday the 7th of November, to Wednesday the 11th of November, at the Oasis International School campus in Cairo, Egypt. Since its establishment in 2008, OISMUN takes pride in being the only bilingual Model United Nations conference in Egypt, with both French and English committees. We have witnessed steady growth, and are constantly improving the OISMUN experience with initiatives like the special conference and crisis committee.
I am proud to announce that this year’s slogan is “Walk the talk: pave the way”, a phrase that reflects on the international community’s approach towards pressing issues our world is facing. We have become accustomed to talking in the form of speeches, promises, discussions, debates, conventions and agreements, while backing down on action. Procrastination has become a regular pattern in today’s society. We witness grave problems on local and global scales, but feel powerless facing them.
This year’s conference aims to encourage its participants to take action; no matter how small. A philosophy that not only applies to international conflicts but extend to our daily lives. Our actions act as stepping stones for others, they breed new ones. By taking action based on our declarations, we pave the way for our community to take action, creating a rippling effect. Our theme this year is “Paving the way for sustainable development through freedom, equality, and democracy”. In order to reach these goals, long term action is in need, and it is paramount to integrate the core values of the 21st century; Freedom, equality and democracy, in a world that is becoming increasingly global and connected.
This year’s conference brings exciting additions to enhance the OISMUN experience, the Special Conference; Historical Committee explores past events and conflicts with today’s mindset. We have also created an exclusive committee for our junior admins and journalists to give them the opportunity to enhance their debating skills whilst still assuming their respective roles. Furthermore, we are enhancing our workshop program, refining existing ones and adding new workshops. These include chairing, International Court of Justice (ICJ), new delegate, organisation team workshops and many more.
I encourage you to look at our new website, meet our team, and explore our different committees and their topics for this year. If you have any inquires, feel free to contact me at secretary-general@oismun.net.
On behalf of the OISMUN team, I look forward to welcoming you in November.
Best Regards,
Seif A. Sarofim
Secretary General
